How Do You Find Exodus?

“But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and its leaf does not wither and in whatever he does, he prospers.” Psalm 1:2-3 NASB

One spring Sunday morning, my soon-to-be husband invited me to the church he had been attending since college. I had not been in church for a while (well, maybe in years), and felt a little uncomfortable, and somewhat out of my element.

We went to his Sunday school class where couples were sitting in a large circle. My boyfriend handed me a Bible, and I remember the teacher saying “turn to Exodus.” Frozen with panic, I quickly eyed everyone else quickly turning to this book. I really didn’t want my boyfriend to know that I couldn’t remember where Exodus was in the Bible (it’s the second book in the Bible). Unfortunately, trying to locate the Table of Contents was just as difficult as finding Exodus.

Maybe you can relate to my story. You may have attended a Bible study or even church, but have no idea what the Bible is, much less the sixty-six books that make up the Bible.

This particular incident was one of many that I can look back on and see God drawing me to a saving faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. As a wedding gift, my mother-in-law gave me a Bible with my name on it. I didn’t know where to begin, and to be honest, I was a little intimidated. This began, however, an amazing journey of learning to delight in God and His Word.

Just as Psalm 1 says, I want to be that tree that is firmly planted in God’s Word, and to receive the living water of Jesus Christ. However, if I am to grow strong roots, I must make time to read and study God’s Word daily. It is more than just knowing where each book is located (although that does help), it is about allowing God’s Word to transform, heal, and convict my heart.

Today, I’m one of those “teachers” in Sunday school, and one of my most favorite things to do is teach young girls about the Bible. We look up books together so that no one ever feels like they are the only person that does not know. I will forever remember how I felt that morning trying to find Exodus, but I can tell you, I’ve never forgotten where that wonderful book is located!
