Then Jesus said to His disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest." Matthew 9:37-38 (NASB)
I lived in a small suburb where I could call the neighbors when I needed an extra cup of sugar or a stick of butter. I was eight months pregnant in April with my second child. Sometime during that year, I came under powerful conviction to pray for my neighbors since every one of them was lost but one. God stirred in me an urgency to beg Him to capture the hearts of the moms I knew.
One afternoon when my son was being active and I was having a quiet time, I headed outside to get the mail. It was a typical spring day in Texas, dark clouds burdened with rain hung low in the sky. A smattering of drops dotted the sidewalk as I made my way to the mailbox. I noticed that just a few steps away my neighbor was also picking up her mail. She waved and we began a conversation.
We talked about the shootings at Columbine which had just happened the day before. She was distressed about the condition of the culture and uttered, "There must be something better in this world." And, there it was, the glorious expectant moment when as the wind swirled around my feet, the Spirit moved in my heart. He whispered, "Tell her!"
Immediately, old insecurities and fear rose up fiercely within my mind. My home seemed to beckon for my return to comfort and peace. I turned to scurry into my house to hide away. As soon as the latch on my door clicked, it was like the door of opportunity for my neighbor had closed. What if she died today? She would not know Jesus. A compelling desire to see my neighbor believe swept over me, and I got down on my knees to petition the Lord to give me another chance.
A few short weeks later, she knocked on my door. "My brother just found Jesus and he says I'm going to hell. Can you help me?" That question began a two month saga of meetings in my home where we spoke openly about Christ-- the fears of giving someone else control, the hope of salvation, the love of a Savior. I got to watch as Jesus drew her into His kingdom. It was an overwhelming event for me as I watched Him passionately pursue her. He was running after her to make her His own; which He did.
